Michael Leonhart is primarily known as a trumpet player, having played with Steely Dan, James Brown, Mos Def, and many others. He won a Grammy Award for "outstanding high school musician" in the U.S. at age 17, and he has released six solo albums and appeared on at least 100 others.
But with his 2010 album as Michael Leonhart & the Avramina 7, he's branched out into funkier, multi-instrumental territory with his latest, Seahorse & the Storyteller [Truth and Soul Records]. Here, he gives the step-by-step lowdown in his studio on how he created two of the album's tracks "Scopolamine" and "Madhouse Mumbai."
