Challenging Yourself in 2015
File Under: Creating and Making Your Music, Marketing Your Music
The end of one year and the beginning of another is a perfect time to take a look back at what you did, but also make plans for what you’d like to achieve for the new year.
So, here's our challenge for you as we head into 2015:
Plan at least one album release (or song release) for this coming year.
Make sure to set a solid date. If you need some external motivation, why not take on the RPM (Record Production Month) Challenge? Anyone can participate and it’s free. The challenge is to create 10 songs or 35 minutes of original music in the month of February.
Make your album or song available for sale.
Pick a distributor and target a date to get your album or song into digital stores. This is so you can tackle the rest of the challenge below.
Determine how you will market your album or song.
To do this, focus on a particular segment of your audience that you want to market towards. Figure out how you would target that group (websites, online forums, podcasts, mp3 blogs, etc.) and who you can tap to help get the message in front of that audience (podcaster, blogger, youtuber, journalist, etc.).
Plan and promote the release.
Thinking through how you would market and promote your album or song takes the same type of skills and creativity most musicians have. Make a PR plan for the release and push sales. For the challenge, the goal here should be to see if you can get at least one one blog, podcast, or other media outlet to cover your release.
There's much more to a release than this, but the goal here is to give you three very achievable challenges for 2015: make some new music, get it out into the world, and tell people about it.
If you would like a step-by-step plan of action for 2015, The Indie Band Survival Guide (Second Edition) details marketing and PR strategies you can use and outlines how to run a release campaign.

Feel free to write us if you have ideas or questions. And have a wonderful new year, and a music-filled 2015!
