Sony has unveiled the PCM-D1 ($2,000), a portable, digital stereo recorder housed in a 1 mm-thick pressed titanium body. The recorder has 4 GB of internal flash memory, supports 24-bit, 96 kHz recording, offers a built-in USB 2.0 port (Mac/Win), and includes removable Memory Stick Pro high-speed storage capabilities. The recorder is lightweight, free of all drive mechanisms, and equipped with built-in, low self-noise condenser microphones in an X - Y configuration. The recorder offers WAV-file format capability.

The PCM-D1 has analog level meters with LED peak overload indicators, and an LCD display with recorder status indication and menu selection options. The signal processing functions including SBM, limiter, and a 200 Hz highpass filter.

The recorder is powered by four AA nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries (batteries and charger are supplied). Battery life during 96 kHz operation is approximately 4 hours when using rechargeable AA batteries. The unit weighs 18.5 ounces with batteries installed.
