Stax of Wax also offers special orders for vinyl releases and carries an exclusive assortment of tee shirts, books and photography including iconic prints from the Morrison Hotel® gallery.
Open seven days a week, from 10:00am-6:00pm, Stax of Wax is situated near the Pacific Ocean in the heart of the Malibu Country Mart, one of Southern California's premiere shopping and dining destinations. The newly designed space was created by Liliana Casabal, of the influential boutique-clothing store Morgane Le Fay (located next door) and Concord Bicycle Music (proud owners of celebrated soul music label Stax Records), and features exquisite architecture and custom displays, allowing for a unique and vibrant music buying experience.
The inspiration for the Stax of Wax vinyl store comes from Satellite Records, the tiny record shop in Memphis, TN that was the retail arm of the Stax Records label. In its 1960s heyday, the Satellite Record shop served as a community hub for passionate music fans in Memphis and became synonymous with ground-breaking music. Stax of Wax aims to emulate this environment for the ever-growing number of music listeners who appreciate and seek out the experience of high-quality artistry and sound that only a vinyl LP can deliver, and to celebrate and foster the relationship between the community, the patrons and the music that they love.
About Stax Records:
The Stax Records story, from its beginning in an old movie theater on East McLemore Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee in 1957, to its extraordinary rise as an international hit-making machine, is an indispensable chapter in American musical history. Amid the civil rights-era racial strife and deep-seated tensions of the late '50s and '60s, Stax's integrated artist roster and staff fundamentally shaped American soul music, spawning the careers of recording artists, songwriters and producers such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the MG's, The Staple Singers, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, The Bar-Kays, Sam & Dave, William Bell, David Porter, Shirley Brown, The Mar-Keys, Steve Cropper, The Mad Lads, and Rufus and Carla Thomas, just to name a few.
During its 15 years in business, Stax released more than 800 singles and nearly 300 LPs, picking up eight GRAMMYs and an ACADEMY AWARD along the way. In all, Stax placed more than 167 hit songs in the Top 100 pop charts, and a staggering 243 hits in the Top 100 R&B charts. Today, the original site of Stax Records is a multimillion-dollar campus that includes the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School. The Soulsville Foundation's two youth programs serve primarily at-risk, inner city youth.
Concord Bicycle Music, proud guardians of Stax's recorded legacy, continues to reissue high-quality Stax recordings and box sets as well as acclaimed, new recordings on the Stax label from artists such as Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals.
