I’VE INSTALLED USB MIDI DRIVERS FOR KORG’S KONTROL SOFTWARE, AND WHILE THE DRIVERS SHOW UP AS EXISTING AND CONNECTED, THE KONTROL SOFTWARE DOESN’T SEE IT. WHAT CAN MAKE MIDI DEVICES JUST DISAPPEAR?COLIN MCCLINTOCK NEW PORT RICHEY, FL VIA EMAIL

The usual solution is deleting duplicate ports. You can create a batch process file to reveal hidden ports in Device Manager. Type the following in Notepad and save it as a .BAT file (e.g., ShowPorts.BAT): set devmgr_show_ nonpresent_devices=1 start Devmgmt.mscConnect some USB devices you use often. 1: You walk in and the engineer says, “Wow, this is your lucky day! I just updated my DAW software, and you''ll be my first project to use it!”

2: Setup is complete, and you''re ready to rock. But when you switch on a 100-watt guitar amp to start recording, the lights dim. And it''s not mood lighting. And they stay dim.

3: You make a comment, the engineer gives you a quizzical look, and then says, “Oh, that buzz? Don''t worry about it—you can only hear it on playback.”

4: Every time you talk to the engineer, he leans in a little closer, cups his hand to his ear, and says, “What?” in a loud voice.

5: There''s a hardware pitch-correction processor in the rack. You see that the Bypass switch is taped to the “on” position. Be afraid . . . be very afraid.

Just how big is this title? The latest installation in Rockstar Games’ blockbuster crime-adventure franchise was five years in the making and cost an estimated $260 million dollars to produce; at press time, it was on its way to becoming the best-selling game of all time.

Music has always been part of the GTA narrative, but V truly takes it to the next level: Three interactive scores evolve with game missions; 241 licensed tracks play on 17 in-game radio stations. Heavyweights DJ Shadow, Tangerine Dream, The Alchemist, Oh No, and Woody Jackson worked with dozens of artists, producers, and music supervisors to produce original music. But all told, more than 1,000 people touched this project at some point during development. Not many of us are fortunate enough to work on creative efforts of this scale,...
