2001 Fender Deluxe Precision Special: “This is what I call the ‘mexi-melt’ – it’s gnarly, naturally overdriven, and useful for the rockers. This is the sound of ‘Remnants’ and ‘Highly Suspicious.’
1979 Gibson Ripper: “It has nice, warm humbuckers and great sustain. You’ll find this on ‘Two Halves’, ‘Thank You Too’, and ‘I’m Amazed.’
1980 Rickenbacker 4001: “This has that classic ‘Ric-O-Sound.’ I used this bass on ‘Aluminum Park’ and Jim [James] used it for the fuzzed out lead-bass sound on ‘Two Halves.’
1976 Alembic Series I: This belongs to our drum tech. It was the only bass that could cut through such a busy song as ‘Evil Urges.’ It has a tone that doesn’t compete with Patrick [Hallahan’s] kick drum.
1970 Fender Precision Fretless: “Smooth as hell. This is all over ‘Librarian’ and ‘Smokin' from Shootin.'”
1978 Fender Jazz Bass: “I love the finger noise this guy picks up. This bass was also used on every previous record, so I had to sneak him in somehow. The perfect opportunity to do that was ‘Look at You.’”
2004 Epiphone Jack Casady Signature: “The flatwound beast! You can hear this on ‘Sec Walkin'’ and ‘Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Parts 1 and 2.” – Shane Mehling
