Red Bull Music Academy announced a new documentary series called beat:repeatNY
, celebrating iconic New York City anthems and the drum machines that underpinned them. Featured artists include Blondie’s Chris Stein, Arthur Baker, Le Tigre’s Johanna Fateman, Black Moon’s Evil Dee and Ninja Tune’s Lee Bannon. The trailer for the series premiered today via Complex

Over the course of eight episodes, artists will introduce us to the beat and their story, focusing on the moment of inspiration that birthed a classic. From disco to dance punk, thrash metal to hip hop, beat:repeat NYC
will cover a wide variety of sounds, drum machines and personalities.
Red Bull Music Academy has always been active in exploring new connections within music culture, especially in the intersection of music and technology. With beat:repeat NYC
, both techies who love circuit diagrams and music fans eager to simply learn more about their favorite tracks will be entertained by insightful stories of artists that have explored groundbreaking new ideas in the field of music creation.
In addition to the video series, Red Bull Music Academy will also host a drum machine exhibition at Red Bull Studios New York. Working with author Joe Mansfield, 101 drum machines from his private collection will be presented, highlighting their impact on popular music over the past 60 years. beat:repeatNYC
coincides with this month’s Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York, kicking off today with Bounce Ballroom
at Brooklyn Night Bazaar. The month-long series of live performances, club nights, lectures, art installations and more, features a lineup of innovative artists, unique venues and signature show concepts that explore today’s musical landscape while paying homage to its history. The diverse musical showcase, which will become an annual New York City festival, is a legacy to the critically acclaimed Red Bull Music Academy that took place in New York in 2013.
