Cheap Thrills

By Marty Cutler and Gino Robair | Thu, 13 Oct 2011

The DSI Electronics/Kawasaki Bang-A-Boom ($25) rocks hard, with eight funky presets and four pads. You can use the pads or a pair of sticks included to play the kick, two snares, and the crash cymbals. The grooves are deep, ranging from Clavinet-powered funk a la Stevie Wonder to percolating, sequencer-driven beats reminiscent of Scritti Politti. The samples are not pristine, but who cares as long as the sounds ring your bell? In fact, we would have killed for these snare samples a few years ago.
