D&M Professional has announced its new field recorder, the PMD661 compact digital recorder ($599 Street).

This professional handheld PCM/MP3 recorder offers a streamlined form factor, the use of SD flash media, an improved top facial layout with fewer buttons (as compared to its predecessor, the PMD660), and a more developed multi-functional operation. Its compact size (6.5" x 3.7" x 1.4") allows for single-handed operation.

The PMD661 features switchable balanced mic/line XLR inputs with +48V phantom power, a S/PDIF digital input, unbalanced line-outs on RCA connectors, a secondary unbalanced line-in on 3.5 mm mini jack connector, built-in stereo condenser microphones, built-in stereo speakers, a large easy-view OLED (Organic LED) display, and a USB 2.0 port for drag and drop file transfer. You also get sample rate selections, in 16- or 24-bit quantization, of 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz recording.

The recorder incorporates SD flash media and supports cards of up to 32 GB in size. In addition to high capacity media storage, the recorder offers up to five-plus hours of recording time from four AA Alkaline or NiMH batteries (not included). What's more is that the recorder comes bundled with Marantz Professional Mark Editor (Mac/Win) software, which allows the marker points made on the recorded file to be adjusted post-recording, creating a new file, so that basic editing can be carried out on a computer.

The company expects to ship the PMD661 in January 2009. For more information, please visit d-mpro.com.
