Coachella 2013: A Festival in Photos

This year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival drew more than 180,000 hipsters and EDM geeks to the desert town of Indio, CA. For the second time since the inaugural event in 1999, promoter Goldenvoice, featured the same lineup for two weekends including Blur, Phoenix, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Passion Pit, Hot Chip, the Postal Service, Bat for Lashes, Janelle Monae, Franz Ferdinand, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, and New Order, making it impossible to see everyone on the roster.

Artists performed on two stages and three tents, each one with its own style and feel; the unmistakably unique centerpiece attraction was a colorful beacon of non-stop, Burning Man-style entertainment called the Do Lab. It was very clear from the sometimes empty headlining shows, that the tents were no side acts to the main stage: In particular the larger-than-a-football-field Sahara tent, otherwise known as "the rave tent," pumped out sounds of DJs Moby, Mimosa, and Bassnectar, amongst many others from a new-and-improved taller structure, supersized stage with cubes overhead, and bright-as-the-sun LED lights designed for the dance music culture. During the first weekend, the tents also provided needed shelter from high winds and dust storms that made the festival music goers look as though they were plucked out of a scene from Mad Max!
