The European Court of Justice has just ruled in favor of electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, for a sample used in Sabrina Setlur’s 1997 track "Nur Mir."

Kraftwerk founding members Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider-Esleben argued that producers Moses Pelham and Martin Haas did not have permission to use a drum sample in "Nur Mir" from the 1977 Kraftwerk track "Metall Auf Metall."

It remains to be seen what the implications are for music production at large. In a report in Billboard, Raffaella De Santis, a senior associate at a London-based law firm said the ruling "could have a chilling effect on artistic expression in an increasingly remix culture."
