The annual Moogfest music, art, and technology festival celebrates the legacy of Bob Moog, the visionary engineer who pioneered the analog synthesizer and other technology tools used by artists like Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Kraftwerk. This year’s festival, which took place from May 19 to 22, featured more than 300 performers and other innovators—from Gary Numan, GZA, Grimes, and Laurie Anderson to virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier and “ transhumanist” visionary Dr. Martine Rothblatt. For the first time, Moogfest took place in Durham, North Carolina, a fast-growing hub of technology, culture, and entrepreneurship.
The overarching theme of the event was perhaps best encapsulated in the moving keynote by virtual-reality pioneer Jaron Lanier: "The one thing I want to ask of you is, to push as hard as you can to make technology beautiful and expressive.”
