Dave Smith Instruments has released a new operating system for the acclaimed Prophet 12 hybrid digital/analog poly synth that adds a number of highly requested features. The new version, OS 1.3, ships with newly purchased instruments. It is also available for download from the company’s website for users wishing to upgrade instruments with older versions of the OS. The upgrade is compatible with both the keyboard and the desktop version of the Prophet 12.
Notable among the new features are:
• Classic linear FM synthesis
• Support for up to 16 alternate tunings (a set of 16 popular tunings is included)
• MIDI note output from the arpeggiator
• Assignable voice stacking in unison mode
• New modulation destinations
The addition of linear FM is a key feature of the upgrade and significantly expands the tonal palette of the Prophet 12. Linear FM (frequency modulation) was originally popularized in Yamaha’s classic DX-series of instruments and is well-suited to creating a wide range of sounds ranging from percussive bell-like timbres to hard-edged industrial effects.
Designed to provide a maximum of polyphony and programming depth, the Prophet 12 has been embraced by musicians from a wide range of genres for use on stage and in the studio. Said Smith, “The new OS adds some very powerful new features to an already powerful instrument. The advantage of the Prophet 12’s hybrid architecture is that we can continue to enhance the digital part of its sound engine while preserving all of the analog warmth of its filters — which are a big part of its sound. It’s a super powerful, super flexible combination.”
“We’ve always felt that nobody can touch the Prophet 12 for depth and breadth of sound. Sound designers love it. But so do performers because of how much ground it can cover on stage or in the studio. This upgrade is only going to push things further,” added Smith.
The Prophet 12 has a MAP of $2,999. Price and specifications subject to change.
