Another NAMM show is in the books, so now we can assess not just our favorite products, which you can get to below, but also the big trends as we see them. This is where many, many things are looking up, because we are getting the best of the old technology mixed with the continually progressing new technology.
For example, the expanding field of modular synths is not just a trendy re-hashing of old glory days, but a fully modern way to put highly creative tools in the hands of modern producers, performers and DJs. As such, many of the new modular crop incorporate technology that will put them easily into the workflows of DAW and DJ software users.
Besides that, we saw the launch of The MIDI Association to promote the 30+ year old MIDI standard, and it couldn't have come at a better time. MIDI's not going away; it's spreading everywhere, even into thin air and the cloud. Wireless Bluetooth MIDI has been trickling out, but it's set to explode in 2016 with companies such as Korg and Retronyms adopting it for portable products that also thrive on iOS music.
Not only that, but Web-MIDI will make a splash, as well. After the Web-MIDI API came out last year for incorporating MIDI straight into web browswers, Google Chrome browser has adopted it, and companies like Yamaha and Keith McMillen Instruments look to take advantage of it sooner rather than later.
