Big Fish Audionow offers pHATfactory | 001: Solida Sick Synth (Mac/Win), a newlibrary that comes with Bitshift Audio's pHATmatik Pro loop-creationplug-in. PHATfactory loops can play back at any tempo and will sync toVST 2.0-compliant host software.

Cakewalk has acquired VST adapter technology fromU.K.-based FXpansion and gains exclusive publishing and distributionrights of the technology. In addition, all support and updates forregistered FXpansion adapter users will be handled directly throughCakewalk.

Edirol's UA-1000 is amultiport, high-speed USB 2.0 audio interface that has a 480 Mbpstransfer rate and 24-bit, 96 kHz full-duplex performance capabilities.The device has 10 channels and features a variety of analog inputs(XLR/1/4-inch TRS combo jacks, high-impedance 1/4-inch inputs), S/PDIFI/O, ADAT Lightpipe I/O, MIDI I/O, and send/return inserts. Edirol alsointroduced the UR-80 USB Recording System, which combines an assignablecontrol surface with USB, audio, and MIDI connectivity. The UR-80offers 24-bit, 96 kHz specs and a GM2 Hyper Canvas softwaresynthesizer.

Mackie Designs isreviving the Tapco name with the introduction of the Tapco 6306, a6-channel mixer featuring two low-noise mic preamps, two instrumentinputs, a stereo aux return, two aux sends, and an 8-segment LED meter.Mackie also unveiled the Mackie Control C4, a plug-in andvirtual-instrument control surface that offers four banks of eightV-Pots and four full-size displays. The controller gives the userinstant access to 32 software parameters without the need for scrollingor bank switching.

MBHO has announced theMBNM-440 CLS small-diaphragm condenser microphone, which offers acardioid pattern, a switchable -10 dB pad, and a highpass filter, andaccepts phantom-power voltages of 22V to 48V. The MBNM-440 CLS isavailable singly or in matched pairs.

Native Instruments has announced Absynth 2.0(Mac/Win), featuring several types of synthesis (subtractive,wavetable, FM, AM, ring modulation, and waveshaping) and sampling. Eachvoice has six synth oscillators or three sampling oscillators, fourfilters, three ring modulators, and a waveshaping distortion function.Waveforms can be drawn by hand or created by sketching harmonics. Theprogram comes with over 800 presets.

Steinbergannounced a number of new products, beginning with a 2.0 revision ofthe company's soft sampler, HALion. Groove Agent is a VSTi drum synthcreated in the tradition of Virtual Guitarist. Steinberg refers to itsnew Xphraze VSTi as a "Smart Phrase Synthesizer" that offerssound-shaping and real-time polyphonic phrase tools. And the companyoffers a new plug-in collection called the Waldorf Edition. Steinbergalso announced that it will offer a $50 rebate to purchasers of CubaseSL (Mac/Win). Customers can take advantage of the rebate by downloading thecoupon and presenting it to any Steinberg dealer. This promotionruns from February 21 through March 31, 2003.

TC Electronichas announced PowerCore FireWire, which, the company says, offersnearly twice the power of the PCI-based PowerCore card. The PCI-cardand the FireWire version of PowerCore can be used at the same time. Allsignal processing is performed on the PowerCore unit, freeing up hostresources for virtual instruments or native plug-ins. TC Electronicalso offers software version 1.7 for the PowerCore DSP card for Windowsand Mac OS X. (Mac OS X users get the benefit of Apple Audio Unitsplug-in support.) In addition, TC-Helicon has brought its voice-modelingtechnology to the PowerCore platform with VoiceModeler. Theapplications range from subtle sound enhancement to extreme processing.All parameters are dynamically controlled by the incoming audio,creating a very natural sound.

Ueberschall andreFX have created the VLP 120, a combined virtual sample player andsound library on 5 CDs that offers 3 GB of "vintage licks and phrases."The licks were played live on more than 20 instruments by professionalstudio musicians.

The annualSouth by Southwest Musicand Media Conference (SXSW) will take place March 12 through 16,2003, in Austin, Texas. SXSW consists of a trade show, a conference,and a music festival with hundreds of bands participating. This year'skeynote speaker at the conference will be producer Daniel Lanois, andother speakers and panelists will include record executives, musicjournalists, and label owners. GoGirlsMusic.com, an online community ofindependent female musical artists, will present Invasion of theGoGirls SXSW 2003, a series of showcases that will take place in Austinduring SXSW. The showcases will feature emerging women artists from allover the United States.

Digidesign presents specialguests Bad Boy Bill and The Crystal Method in demonstrations revealinghow they use Pro Tools. M-Audio will present BT, The Crystal Method,and Deepsky. Stanton has invited DJ Craze, DJ Faust, DJ Shortee, and DJJesse Saunders to demonstrate the Final Scratch system.There will beproduct demos by Emagic, Native Instruments, Ableton, Propellerhead,Waves, and Cakewalk. Big Fish Audio'sPhat Beats from the Box is a 2-CD collection of audio and Acidized WAVfiles that offers a wonderful selection of human-beat-box samples andloops from Kenny Mohammed (aka the Human Orchestra), Omri Anghel (akathe Human Beat), Baba, and Hesher. The loops range from 75 to 147 bpmin tempo, and the breadth of samples is impressive. Check out this Web clip of Kenny Mohammed in action.

Clavia announced theNord Modular G2, a USB-compatible hardware synth offering a fullyassignable modulation wheel and pitch stick, and rotary encoders withcircular LED graphs. The G2 offers eight Morph Groups per patch, whichlet you control sets of parameters from single internal control sourcesor MIDI. Synth modules include oscillators, filters, a sequencer, EGs,a vocoder, physical-modeling capabilities, and effects (reverb, delay,frequency shifting). The G2 has four line inputs, an XLR mic input withpreamp, and four line outputs.

Cycling '74announced the release of CreativeSynth Development's Mode 1.0, a set offive plug-ins -- three instruments and two effects units -- for VST andRTAS host applications running on Mac OS X. Bang is a single-voicepercussion module that combines sample playback, FM synthesis, andanalog-modeling drum synthesis. Mono is a monophonic synthesizer andPoly is a polyphonic synthesizer. Spin is a rhythm-based effectsprocessor that features a state-variable filter, panning effects,rhythmic gating, delay, distortion, and bit-reduction. Wash is aneffects processor built around an interconnected network of sixrecirculating delay lines.

Image-LineSoftware released FL Studio v4, which, the compay says, will replaceits Fruityloops range of products. FL Studio v4 features a 64-channelmixer, 64 effects tracks, an integrated wave editor, a pianoroll-styleplaylist, and a Live mode.

PropellerheadSoftware announced Reason 2.5, which includes a number of newfeatures. The RV7000 Advanced Reverb is a stereo effect module offeringnine algorithms (small space, room, hall, arena, plate, spring, echo,multitap, and reverse), as well as an EQ and gate. The BV512 DigitalVocoder gives you 4 to 512 bands and can be used as a fully automatedgraphic equalizer. The Scream 4 Sound is a distortion module with a +/-18 dB 3-band equalizer. The UN-16 Unison re-creates the effects of theUnison button found on '80s synths. Spider Audio merges and splitsaudio and Spider CV merges and splits CV and gate signals.

Sonicreef, formerlyknown as Blueshock, has released version 1.5 of its softwaresynthesizer, Tsunami. The 6-voice synth includes three alias-freeoscillators, a 24 dB resonant filter, ring modulation, anddelay.

Tascam introduced theUS-122 (Mac/ Win), a USB audio and MIDI interface featuring two XLR micinputs (with phantom-power and analog inserts) and two line-levelinputs on balanced 1/4-inch jacks (switchable to guitar-level fordirect-instrument recording). The US-122 includes 16 channels of MIDII/O and adjustable zero-latency direct-monitoring capabilities. Driversare provided for compatibility with ASIO, WDM, GSIF, and Core Audio (OSX) software systems.

TejeraMicrosystems Engineering (TME) offers the Recording Studio Test CD,an audio CD offering test tones and step-by-step directions forcalibrating and setting up your system. The disc also includes a dataarea containing instructions, graph paper, and a glossary of audioterms. The enhanced data portion of this disc requires a computer witha Web browser and Adobe Acrobat Reader software. The tests help youidentify speaker channels, calibrate VU meters, catch dropouts indigital audio workstations, and tune monitors to a room.

Behringer hasunveiled its Tube Ultragain Mic100, a low-noise tube mic preamp, whichfeatures a hand-selected 12AX7 vacuum tube. The Mic100 includes aphase-reverse switch, phantom power, and a switchable pad. It can alsobe used as a DI.

Blacet Research,makers of modular analog synthesizers, has released a new module, theBZ2300 Binary Zone. The module includes a gate input, a clock input, apair of clock outputs, a built-in lag processor, a range switch, andboth normal and inverted outputs.

EastWest hasannounced Yellow Tools Culture (Mac/Win), a virtual instrument thatcomes with over 9 GB of world, ethno, industrial, and orchestralpercussion sounds on two DVDs. Culture is available for MAS, RTAS, VST2.0, and AU. EastWest also carries Zero G's Wired: The Elements ofTrance (Reason format) which comes with 1.2 GB of loops made usingdrums, ambient sounds, basses, and synths. The collection includes morethan 930 REX files, 600 NN19 patches, 20 Redrum kits, and 300 singlepercussion sounds.

HHB is offering newversions of its CDR74 and CDR80 blank CD-R media, as well as the inkjetprintable CDR80IP and CDR80BulkIP, and thermal printable CDR80BulkThermal. The new discs were developed for use in the 1x to 24x writersused in audio CD recorders and duplicators.

Kid Nepro now offersdownloadable AIFF and WAV files. Most files are multisampled for easykeymapping into your sampler. Because it's difficult to format forevery possible sampler, Kid Nepro is making the raw sample filesavailable as well. Sound lists can be found here.

M-Audio announced theOzone, an all-in-one keyboard, MIDI control surface, mic preamp, 24/ 96USB audio interface, and USB MIDI interface. Ozone has a 25-notekeyboard with full-sized keys, pitch and modulation wheels, and eightMIDI control knobs. Audio inputs include an XLR microphone input withbuilt-in preamp and phantom power, a balanced TRS 1/4-inch input,unbalanced 1/4-inch stereo aux inputs, a 1/4-inch stereo headphonejack, and two separate MIDI Outs.

Sek'd announced that anew PRODIF 88 driver is now available. The update includes Zero LatencyMonitoring for Samplitude and Sequoia products, ASIO direct-inputmonitoring, and automatic monitor switching from file playback to thecorresponding direct AES/EBU input when you enter recordmode.

Spectrasonicshas announced that its Trilogy Total Bass Module (Mac/Win) plug-ininstrument is now shipping. Trilogy offers a 3 GB library with hundredsof bass sounds and a powerful interface for creating custom userpatches. Trilogy functions as a native plug-in instrument in EmagicLogic, MOTU Digital Performer, Steinberg Cubase VST and Nuendo, andDigidesign Pro Tools.

X-Vision Audiohas announced that Magix Samplitude 7 (Win) is now shipping, inClassic and Professional versions. X-Vision is offering a number ofupgrade and cross-grade packages for Samplitude 7. In addition,X-Vision announced Dsound RT Player Pro version 2.1 is now availablefor OS X, and that RME is offering the QuadMic and OctaMic microphonepreamps.

Yow (aka Yowstar) hasreleased version 2.0 of its loop-mixing instrument, Girl (Mac). Theupdate includes a surround-sound mixer that can handle 3 to 16channels, a cleaner interface, improved session management,comprehensive MIDI control, live-recording features, MIDI Clock andtapped tempo-sync, transport control from MIDI sequencers, support forCycling '74's Pluggo VST plug-ins, and support for VSTInstruments.
