It’s not that the audio and instrument world stops over the holidays, it’s that it usually experiences a calm before the NAMM show storm in January. In this world, the holidays aren’t really finished until the last NAMM-party hangover has been slept off. So while I have rounded up the last free offers of the year, in early January I may be revisiting the best of 2017 and some older, never-profiles standbys in advance of the annual festival of new gear happening January 25-28 in Anaheim, California.
Until then, happy New Year! All is forgiven, 2017.
Ableton Free Sampled Instruments from Pre-Columbian America
Having missed this when Ableton released it earlier this year, I caught wind of the free Metaphor of Sound Instrument Racks (for Ableton Live) from Ableton’s 2017 wrap-up newsletter. You’ll catch some wind, as well, from the ancient ocarinas and flutes in this download.
The instruments and percussive sounds like rattles and bells in this 82 MB Live Pack come from The Metaphor of Sound exhibit at the Costa Rican Museo del Oro from earlier in 2017. The exhibit covered more than 60 instruments from indigenous peoples of pre-Columbian Central America from roughly 500 BCE to 1550 CE.
A Costa Rican Ableton Live trainer then multi-sampled some of the instruments and put out a sample pack with a contest to make the best track using some of the samples.
Check out the pleasant Soundcloud playlist of the contest finalists above, and grab the Metaphor of Sound Live Pack for yourself.
ADM Wrapping Paper Instruments: Free Ableton Live Pack 164
Even though the presents under the tree have long since been liberated of their paper prisons, you can still here the echoes of ripping and tearing in your head. Or is that just AfroDJMac’s latest free Ableton Live Pack? For his 7th Christmas-themed free download, the Ableton-certified trainer has made two instruments from wrapping paper noises. The Drum Rack has 48 sounds of ripping, tearing, folding and taping, while the Melodic Instrument Rack makes a playable tone out of slapping the end of a long wrapping paper cardboard tube — along with his normal 8 programmed Macro controls. This tree may be losing its needles, but this free offer is evergreen.
Red Room Audio Snaps Claps Slaps Stomps & Shouts for Kontakt
When Red Room Audio released its Palette collection of commercial symphonic sample libraries earlier this month, it included a nice free download called Snaps Claps Slaps Stomps & Shouts, a 185 MB collection of vocal and body sounds: snaps, claps, chest and knee slaps, stomps, and shouted words from men and women. It’s a fun and unique concept, let alone being free.
There are 720 total 24-bit/44.1kHz samples in a lossless format for Native Instruments Kontakt. Note that Snaps Claps Slaps Stomps & Shouts only works with the full version of Kontakt, version 5.6.8 or above — not Kontakt Player.
