Musitek Corporation has announced SmartScore 3 (Mac/Win), which is available in five editions: Professional Edition ($399 retail), Songbook Edition ($299 retail), and three $99 packages designed specifically for MIDI creation, solo piano music, or solo guitar music. New features include an improved score recognition engine. According to the manufacturer, the program's highly accurate guitar fret and chord symbol recognition ability allows for automatic transposition of chord symbols while transposing key signatures. Other musical symbols the program recognizes include glissandi, arpeggios, triplets (marked and implied), on/off pedal marks, and tempo and dynamic markings. These can also be applied during playback. Multiple drum patterns can be selected and added to playback as well.
Other new features include the ability to burn playback to an audio CD and save finished documents in the Adobe PDF format. The new Karaoke View offers scrolling lyrics and a bouncing ball.
SmartScore 3 files are compatible with MakeMusic Finale 2003 and 2004 through SmartScore’s FIN file output, and with Sibelius 3 using the NIFF format. SmartScore also features automatic resolution and skew correction, text recognition, automatic error checking, drag-and-drop part extraction, tempo and Velocity graphical controllers, a step-time note entry system, drum notation support, and the ability to record drum tracks by tapping QWERTY keys.
