Remix Hotel reopened for business in Los Angeles November 2-4, this time at the sumptuous new SAE Institute on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. The focus as always was bringing attendees unparalleled access to the most advanced production and performance gear, as well as the knowledge and advice of top players in the music industry.
A staple of the Hotels, Shocklee Innertainment dropped science to standing-room-only crowds for six panels, which varied from mixing and recording tips, the producer/artist relationship and trends in DJing to the business side of music, regarding legal and management representation and how to license music to video media. Panels enlisted the help of Tal Herzberg (Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige), DJ Swamp (Beck, DMC champ), Robert Carranza (Mars Volta, Ozomatli, Blackalicious), Anthony Kilhoffer (John Legend, Kanye West), Def Jef (Nas, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg) and Joe Leimberg (Snoop, Proof, Busdriver), to name a few. Hank Shocklee himself (producer/founder of Public Enemy) was as passionate and humorous as he was knowledgeable, congratulating attendees for educating themselves about the music business, which is critical for success.
Star power was not the main attraction, but when combined with intimate production classes and Q&As, it had people amped. The most anticipated event was BT's master class, after which one Las Vegas DJ said, “Dude, I almost cried, it was so good.” Eager heads also saw Josh Gabriel, Photek, DJ Revolution and Klayton of Celldweller present Logic DAW sessions in Apple's room. And Apple gave free Logic classes on individual laptops.
SAE's studio rooms were transformed into showcases for Roland, Native Instruments, Digidesign/M-Audio, JBL, Pioneer, SSL, Euphonix, Galbanum, Rane/Serato and Novation. Attendees were excited about the firsthand access not only to the equipment, but also to expert representatives from each company who could answer any question. Even a very tall comedian by the name of Sinbad stopped by to check out the new technology for his daughter and write on our blog.
