ALL KINDS OF FUNKY
Remix is a sucker for sweet box sets, especially when it ups the street cred. Rhino has been releasing dope stuff lately, including the latest from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco and Warner Bros., What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves. Covering tracks from 1967 to 1977, the four-disc set includes legendary artists such as The Commodores, Curtis Mayfield and Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as lesser known acts The Fabulous Counts, Little Sister and Fred Wesley & the Horny Horns. Old-school cool.
HYPER + FLY PIANOS
Piano multisamples are everywhere; they're as hard to find as porn leaflets in Vegas at this point. But with the Reason Pianos ReFill ($129; www.propellerheads.se) for Reason 3, Propellerhead introduces what it calls Hypersampled pianos. Steinway D, Steinway K and Yamaha C7 pianos were recorded with six sets of microphones at all velocity levels and multiple mic positions. In the dozens of piano and Combinator patches, you can mix the level from each mix source within Reason and control the amount of room ambience. The best part? They sound like you died and went to Carnegie Hall.
