SXSW 2012 Gearing Up

The South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference and Festival has had a pretty impressive run of 25 annual events since 1987, but the 26th annual SXSW is shaping up to be the most amazing one yet. Over 17,000 convention attendees will journey to Austin, Texas, Tuesday, March 13 through Sunday, March 18, 2012 to check out the best of everything that music and the music business has to offer. The activities in the Austin Convention Center are an amazing resource for music industry professionals at every level of their careers. This year will offer more opportunities than ever before to learn from stellar music professionals who are working in the business day in and day out. Opportunities for exposure to the latest gear, the latest technologies, the latest techniques abounds. SXSW will shine a spotlight on the talents of musicians from around the globe for 6 nights during the world famous SXSW Music Festival.

The 2012 SXSW Music Conference held at the Austin Convention Center is a core component of the event covering business and creative issues in music. The daytime programming offers innovative, informative and entertaining presentations. Highlights this year will include: Bruce Springsteen's Keynote on Thursday, March 17 at 12:00 p.m.; SXSW Featured Speaker Sessions and SXSW Interviews on Wednesday, March 14 with Martin Atkins at 12:30 p.m. and Downloaded: the SXSW Interview with Shawn Fanning, Sean Parker and Alex Winter at 2:00 p.m.; Thursday, March 15 features Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart at 2:45 p.m., and Van Toffler at 4:00 p.m.; Friday, March 16 features Juanes at 12:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 17 includes StarGate at 12:30 p.m and Bomba Estereo at 2:00 p.m. Over 190 panels and presentations will cover all aspects of music-making. Panel topics include Woody Guthrie at 100; Snacky Tunes: Food, Music & Internet Radio; Banking Beats: Africa's Music Economy; Badass Guitar Apps; ATM in Your Pocket; Mandate My Ass: Gil Scott- Heron's Activist Legacy; Opportunities That Others Miss on the Web; Funkytown Stories; and Turning Music Consumers Into Creators.

One of the new conference offerings this year is Artist Central, an area featuring programming specifically geared towards our musician participants. Clinics will be offered on digital recording software by instructors from the Berklee School of Music as well as instrument clinics presented by The Cult's Ian Astbury, Andrew WK, DJ Z-Trip and Skunk Baxter. Rounding out Artist Central will be Mentor Sessions and Shorties, a series of fifteen minute short form presentations presented in one hour single theme blocks.

The SXSW Trade Show will be held from Monday, March 12 through Thursday, March 15. This four-day show will span all three conferences – music, interactive and film - and is the heart of the convergence for the evolving industries represented. The trade show offers a unique opportunity for performers and other industry professionals to meet in one-on-one scenarios and exchange information. 20 countries from around the world are represented by participating organizations. Countries represented are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Taiwan, UK - England, UK- Scotland, and from every corner of the United States with representatives on hand to aid in broadening careers. Also located in the trade show is the Next Stage, in an almost variety show-like presentation, this stage will host panelists, filmmakers, comedians, and musicians bringing a sample of all that is happening during SXSWeek. Also taking place in the convention center is Music Gear Expo, The Radio Day Stage, the Ballroom G Day Stage, and the South By Bookstore all running Wednesday, March 14 - Saturday, March 17. Returning for the third year is the Music Gear Expo with manufacturers from top companies showcasing guitars, drums, amps, pedals, keyboards, software and other accessories needed by musicians. Strait Music will be on hand to sell instruments by Expo exhibitors as well as useful accessories. The Radio Day Stage is a favorite place to enjoy performances from showcasing artists, grab a drink and relax. SXSW has partnered with 7 of the most innovative radio stations including KCRW, KEXP, KUT, WFUV, WXPN, The Current and Columbia's Radionica all of which played a major role in curating the shows. The Ballroom G Day Stage will offer "only at SXSW" events from a DJ battle, to unique collaborative bills of showcasing artists, to comedy sets. The South by Bookstore will feature notable SXSW registrants selling and signing books as well as CDs and DVDs of favorite SXSW participants.

Also new this year is the Music Startup Village bringing together the startups, entrepreneurs, investors and cutting-edge digital tastemakers within the 2012 SXSW Festival. This space will showcase the various startup events including SXSW Accelerator presented by Microsoft BizSpark and's "Music Start Up Academy" curriculum, as well as other startup related panels, meet ups, lounges, pitch events and mentoring sessions. The top attraction though is the music in such abundance that one can't help but be exposed to something completely different. The SXSW Music Festival, which spans six nights with a limited number of showcases also scheduled for Tuesday, will present over 2000 musical acts from 60 countries on 100 stages in venues ranging from the most intimate clubs to the outdoor stage located at Auditorium Shores on scenic downtown Lady Bird Lake. The music starts on Tuesday, March 13 and runs through Sunday, March 18. The outdoor shows, at the Auditorium Shores Stage on Lady Bird Lake, are free to the public and take place for three days, Thursday, March 15 through Saturday, March 17. Thursday's show starts at 5:45 p.m. with performances by The Shins, M. Ward and Little Hurricane; Friday's line-up starting at 6:00 p.m. will feature Counting Crows, Diamond Rugs and Tender Mercies. Saturday's line-up will be announced soon, but headlining the show will be The Cult. Media sponsors for the outdoor stage are KVUE, 93.3 KGSR, 101X and KLBJ-FM. Also taking place during the SXSW Music Festival is the Thirtieth Annual Austin Music Awards at the Austin Music Hall on Wednesday, March 14 at 7:09 p.m. sharp. The evening includes performances by Joe King Carrasco & The Crowns with special guests Mariachi Relampago, Jon Dee Graham, and Shawn Sahm; Roots and blues artists Ruthie Foster and Carolyn Wonderland join with Ruthie’s Family Band, Rob Hooper, and Cole El Saleh; Nineties neo-psychedelic darlings Sixteen Deluxe; along with the fresh sounds of Quiet Company, and closing with Alejandro Escovedo. Registration badges and wristbands for SXSW include admission to the Austin Music Awards. Launching this week is the new SXSWfm, the multi-channel online music resource, powered by DMX. SXSWfm brings "The Sound of SXSW," with music from hundreds of showcasing artists from all genres. Collectors of poster art will find all kinds of sweet deals at Flatstock 33 in the Austin Convention Center (ACC) in Ballrooms ABC. The Flatstock Concert Poster Exhibition and Collectors Show presented by SXSW and the American Poster Institute (API) and sponsored by HGTV takes place Wednesday, March 14 from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday, March 15 - 17 from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Over 100 poster artists representing decades of styles, colors and techniques will be selling and displaying their posters. Style X, an exhibition aimed at showcasing emerging talent in the fashion industry, returns for a second year. The event features dozens of up-and-coming designers and manufacturers of women’s and men's apparel, eyeglasses, watches, shoes, and much more. This unique event takes place on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17 at the Austin Convention Center and is free and open to the public. It will feature runway shows, panels and exhibiting designers selling their lines.

The annual SXSW Barbecue & Softball Tournament gets underway Sunday, March 18, at Monroe “Lefty” Krieg Fields. Player warm-up begins at noon, with the first game starting at 1:00 pm sharp. For those who prefer to socialize rather than exercise, there’s authentic Texas Barbecue with all the trimmings prepared by Ruby’s Barbecue (with all natural, free-range beef). Vegetarians need not despair though, Ruby’s does vegetarian options, also. It's a great opportunity for that last meet up while being thoroughly entertained by the antics on the playing field.
