Every January, one of the highlights of the NAMM Show is the TEC Awards. TEC stands for Technical Excellence and Creativity, and the event aims to recognize the achievements of product manufacturers and developers, as well as music and sound producers and studio designers.
NAMM held the 33rd Annual NAMM TEC Awards on Saturday night, with dozens of companies competing in 33 technical and 8 creative categories. The award winners included the Universal Audio Apollo Twin MkII Quad in the Computer Audio Hardware category, Nord Stage 3 in Musical Instrument Hardware, iZotope Spire in Audio Apps & Hardware/Peripherals for Smartphones and Tablets, Akai Professional MPC Live in DJ Production Technology, PreSonus FaderPort 8 in Production Essentials, SoundToys EchoBoy Jr. in Signal Processing Software (Effects), and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in Film Sound Production. Bruno Mars also nabbed three awards for his 24K Magic album, single, and tour.
Comedian Demetri Martin hosted the event, and presenters included recording engineer Chris Lord-Alge and bassist Tal Winkenfeld. The night wrapped up with a two-song performance by Jackson Browne, who accepted the Les Paul Innovation Award for his lifetime contribution to popular music. He was accompanied by The Section, who were inducted into the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame.
