TGIF: Thank Goodness It''s Funny
There is a not-so-secret teen pop star dying to burst out of the Secret Handshake''s Luis Dubuc. There were hints of this American Idol wannabe on his debut, One Full Year (2007), which are fulfilled on this follow-up, My Name Up in Lights. Dubuc''s newfound self-assurance is credited to his fashioning Lights after the sitcoms he grew up on. These songs could easily be theme songs for the shows he name-checks on the song “TGIF”: Full House, Boy Meets World, Step by Step, Family Matters and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Vocals that were masked in robotic effects on Year are bold and confident on Lights. Instrumentation that was homemade and experimental on Year is crisp and brash on Lights—even if Dubuc made the whole thing by himself at home. “Pop” is the key word here—synthesized pop with easy-to-remember, storytelling lyrics of the late ''80s and early ''90s. These are particularly obvious and digestible on “Hey Girl,” where familiar piano stabs lay the groundwork for Dubuc''s assertions of wanting to be a lover; and “What''s Wrong,” whose bubblegum R&B is made for mall consumption. May we suggest Dubuc watch Nick at Nite for continued inspiration? [3.5 out of 5 stars]
