Universal City, Calif., September 25, 2015 As a part of its ongoing community outreach series, legendary pro gear store, Westlake Pro prepares to open its door to multiple Grammy winning producer/engineer, Allen Sides. A dynamo in the audio world, Sides has worked with a host of the leading artists, playing instrumental parts in the 500+ albums he has recorded throughout the years. The workshop, scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2015at 7pm, is centered around achieving optimal speaker sound in settings ranging from ideal to challenging.
Allen Sides and Ocean Way
In 197374, Allen Sides began building custom loudspeakers, leasing a garage in the heart of Santa Monica, CA as a demo room. Just steps away from the Pacific Ocean, this space was appropriately named Ocean Way and served as the very first of the Ocean Way Studios franchise. It was here that musicians became interested not only in the speakers and the two track demos produced, but having Sides record vocal demos designed to replicate his sound. After losing his lease in the mid70s, Ocean Way moved to Hollywood where, after a series of fortunate events, he being working with Bill Putnam, audio everyman. Together, the two put Ocean Way on the map, eventually expanding enough to include United Western Studios and Record One under the Ocean Way umbrella. In 1997, Ocean Way expanded into Nashville where he converted an 1850s church into a three room recording colossus complete with a 146 input Neve.
To date, Ocean Way Recording includes ten studios with locations in Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, St. Barths, and Nashville as well as a host of other offsets including OWR To Go, Classic Equipment Rentals, and Ocean Way Drums.
Montecito and HR3
As demo equipment in this event, the focus will be on the Montecito and HR3 systems, products created for Ocean Way derivative company, Ocean Way Audio. The Montecito, newcomer to the high bandwidth speaker system category, provides a multitude of advancements based on its predecessor the AS1. With the HR3, listeners can expect the quality and uniformity of the HS2, but in a smaller package. With his background in speaker development, Sides is able to offer tips and techniques geared towards maximizing sound at various proficiency levels.
