With the onslaught of DAW-based recording studios, there’s been a resulting explosion of instructional DVDs designed to help YOU. This new one from KAGI Productions offers up more than just the “here’s the plug-ins I use” instructions (although there’s a lot of that here) with Grammy-award winning mixer/producer Charles Dye being the focus of this comprehensive look into the art of mixing. Along with sharing his many tricks of the trade, he examines the process of creating a musical mix that builds on emotional cues to really grab the listener’s attention.
And there’s a lot more here to explore, with the five main chapters broken down into numerous sub chapters. Starting you off with “The Basics” and ending with “Now That Sounds Like a Record!,” it’s like attending a Master Class in the art of mixing modern music. A nice bonus is also the ability to open and manipulate all the session files in LE and TDM formats. This is a great way to learn, experiment, and explore every insane idea you can think of, without the band worrying about their budget!
The only thing that mars this high quality DVD is the video production: a bit too much oh-so-hip video editing that borders on the distracting and occasionally detracts from Charles’ information. That said, you can learn a lot from this thorough look at modern production techniques.
