Pro audio retailer Westlake Pro (Los Angeles) has donated $10,000 to aid David Platillero, a student at pro audio school Blackbird Academy (Nashville); Platillero was severely injured last year after being struck by a distracted driver while riding his bike to class. Westlake Pro's fundraiser, the We Stand With David campaign, began after Dave Pensado and Herb Trawick, of the popular YouTube series Pensado's Place, brought attention to David's story.
Platillero suffered a collapsed lung, severe spinal cord damage, lacerations on his back and arm, and a fractured scapula. Initial reports indicated he may never walk again without assistance, but the student is now able to walk on his own and has returned to school, thanks in part to assistance from fundraisers held by Pensado's Place and Westlake Pro.
Westlake Pro held several auctions for donated products through reverb.com, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to Platillero to support his ongoing recovery. Generous donations from other audio companies, including API, Apogee, Avalon, Avid, DW, Focal, Hear Technologies, IK Multimedia, MOTU, Royer, Shure, UGO, and Ultimate Ears, helped to make Platillero’s recovery possible.
"It was great to see the pro audio community come together to support one of our own in need,” says Westlake Pro CEO George Adjieff. “The generosity of our vendors and clients is truly inspiring."
